Mule Malu: A Tropical Oasis in Bingin, Bali

Bingin, located near Uluwatu, has become one of Bali’s most sought-after coastal destinations. With trendy cafés, busy restaurants offering excellent cuisine, wellness studios, and clifftop beach clubs lining the street, Bingin has a high-energy vibe that is drawing travellers from Australia and all over the world. Tucked quietly away from the main rush lies a hidden sanctuary that immediately slows everything down, called Mule Malu.

During her recent trip to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, our Leisure Travel Specialist, Cordelia, checked into Mule Malu to experience this quiet retreat firsthand.

Stepping Into a Hidden Oasis in Bingin

The moment you walk through the gates of Mule Malu, the noise of Bingin instantly fades. Lush tropical gardens, swaying palms, and the gentle sound of water create a calm haven that feels miles away from the busy Balinese streets and sound of scooters outside. Despite sitting in the middle of town, Mule Malu feels entirely secluded - the kind of place where you instantly exhale and relax upon arrival.

Upon check-in, amongst the property's coconuts and palms, you’re greeted with a warm smile, a cooling welcome drink and a Tridatu bracelet (or Benang Tridatu) carefully placed around your wrist. These traditional Balinese bracelets are made of three intertwined threads of red, white, and black and are worn as a symbol of protection, balance, and spiritual harmony. It’s a thoughtful gesture that sets the tone for your stay.

Beautiful Design and Open-Air Living

The property has been designed to be intimate, housing a small collection of thoughtfully designed rooms scattered among the various gardens. The rooms themselves are simple yet beautiful. The design focuses on elegance, blending natural textures and warm timber finishes, with everything you would need for a comfortable stay.

Stepping into the outdoor bathroom feels like walking into your own private garden. Bougainvillea drapes overhead, tropical greenery surrounds you, and the open-air design and large rainfall showerheads create that tropical holiday feel.

Swim and Relax by Tropical Surroundings

At the heart of the property sits the stunning saltwater swimming pool, framed by comfortable sun lounges and tropical landscaping. Whether enjoying a morning swim or spending an afternoon reading beside the water, the pool area perfectly captures the laid-back atmosphere that makes Mule Malu so special.

The food at Mule Malu is another highlight, focusing mainly on locally sourced organic seasonal dishes. Breakfasts were fresh and delicious, and the café serves excellent meals throughout the day. From garden salads and grain bowls to homemade Italian classics, there's always a meat-free option too - and the staff are happy to adapt dishes to your dietary needs on request.

Unwind at the On-Site Spa

One afternoon, Cordelia took a visit to the on-site spa, housed inside a traditional wooden Joglo. Rebuilt from reclaimed timber and surrounded by gardens, the setting provides a quiet space for a massage after a day exploring the Bukit Peninsula’s surf breaks, beaches or streets.

The staff here are warm, welcoming and endlessly smiley! Nothing feels forced - simply kind, attentive service that makes you feel immediately at home. As Bali travel specialists, we value properties that take their environmental impact and sustainability seriously. Mule Malu is independently certified as an eco-friendly hotel and has incorporated numerous thoughtful initiatives throughout the property, including solar-heated water and a chemical-free saltwater swimming pool. The team has clearly worked hard to create a hotel that respects both the environment and the local community.

The location is also another major advantage for those focused on wellness travel. Situated in the heart of Bingin, the hotel is directly across the road from Bambu Fitness and within easy reach of the area's cafés, restaurants and beaches (such as Bingin, Padang Padang and Dreamland beaches). Yet despite being so central, the property remains wonderfully secluded and quiet.
