There are places that make you want to slow down before you’ve even unpacked your suitcase. Cap Karoso is one of them.
Perched along Sumba’s untouched western coastline, where wild beaches meet rolling hills and fiery sunsets, Cap Karoso resort offers something increasingly rare in luxury travel: a destination intrinsically tied to its surroundings. It isn’t simply somewhere to stay; it is an immersive Indonesian travel experience.
LaTrove Travel’s Leisure Travel Specialist, Natasha, recently spent three incredible days exploring everything that makes this corner of Sumba so special - from regenerative farming and world-class dining to authentic c
Natasha’s Sumba travel experience began in Cap Karoso’s beautifully appointed three-bedroom pool villa, where contemporary design seamlessly meets Sumba’s raw natural beauty.
Space & Style: Warm timber finishes, handcrafted details and generous indoor-outdoor living areas create a perfect sanctuary for family gatherings or trips with friends.
Incredible Outdoor Living: Private pools and expansive terraces provide the ideal setting to unwind while embracing the surrounding ocean views.

After settling into the villa as the sun dipped below the horizon, it was time for dinner at Api Cene, Cap Karoso’s Eastern Indonesian restaurant overlooking the main pool. Celebrating regional flavours from across the Indonesian archipelago, the menu provides an exceptional introduction to the country’s culinary diversity through fresh, locally sourced ingredients, offering an incredible dining experience.
One of the defining aspects of staying at Cap Karoso is how effortlessly it connects guests with the island beyond the property lines. When planning how to tour Sumba, Cap Karoso offers curated excursions that highlight the island’s natural and cultural treasures:
Following breakfast at the Beach Club, Natasha travelled to the spectacular Weekuri Lagoon. Enclosed by dramatic limestone formations and filled with crystal-clear turquoise water, the lagoon offers an unforgettable swimming spot. Along the shoreline, local villagers harvest crayfish to cook over glowing coals, providing an authentic glimpse into everyday island life.

The afternoon continued with a visit to a traditional Sumbanese village, where Natasha learned about the island's indigenous Marapu culture. Walking through centuries-old homes and hearing stories passed down through generations offered valuable insight into the customs and traditions that continue to shape life across Sumba today.
The lives of villagers run according to the rhythms of sacred ceremonies and the words of Ratos, local shamans. These are living traditions of an ancient religion rooted in animist beliefs called Marapu, and being able to learn more about their culture through the local Sumbanese guides becomes a fascinating element of any stay at Cap Karoso.

That evening, the resort delivered one of the most memorable dining experiences of the journey at Julang, Cap Karoso's intimate chef’s table.
Julang, the resort's intimate chef's table, offers a refined tasting experience that celebrates the island's exceptional produce. This dinner-only restaurant welcomes renowned chefs for short residencies, allowing them to showcase their talents while crafting exquisite dishes using mostly locally sourced ingredients. Each guest chef brings their individual style and creativity, transforming fresh, local produce into memorable tasting menus that reflect their culinary journeys.

During Natasha's visit, acclaimed French chef Adrien Cachot presented a menu inspired almost entirely by ingredients harvested from Cap Karoso's regenerative farm and sourced from surrounding communities.
Each course boasted a thoughtful balance of French technique and Indonesian flavours, showcasing the remarkable quality of local ingredients while celebrating the island's rich agricultural heritage.
At Cap Karoso, sustainability isn't a marketing buzzword; it's woven into the fabric of the resort. What was once rocky, unused land has now been transformed into a thriving three-hectare organic farm, supplying much of the produce served across the property's restaurants. It also breathes new life into the surrounding landscape. Through regenerative farming practices, composting, natural fertilisers and careful water management, the farm has become both the culinary heart of the resort and a symbol of its long-term commitment to Sumba.
Natasha spent the morning wandering through rows of vibrant vegetables, fragrant herbs and tropical fruit trees before sitting down to an unforgettable farm-to-table lunch. Seeing where the ingredients were grown just moments before they arrived on the plate transformed the meal into something far more exciting than just delicious food. Every dish celebrated the island's incredible produce, allowing the quality of each ingredient to shine without unnecessary embellishment.
Yet the experience extends beyond exceptional dining. The farm also serves as a place of education, where local residents can learn organic farming, permaculture and landscaping techniques that can be taken back to their own communities. It's an initiative that reflects Cap Karoso's belief that luxury should leave a positive legacy - not only for its guests but also for the people and environment that make this extraordinary corner of Sumba so special.
For Natasha, this experience was more than just enjoying a beautiful lunch; it offered a genuine insight into the philosophy that underpins Cap Karoso. It revealed the philosophy that quietly influences every restaurant, every menu and every meal served across the property.
Following a couple of days of discovery, exceptional dining and cultural immersion, Natasha's final afternoon was dedicated to completely unwinding by enjoying a signature treatment at Cap Karoso's tranquil spa.
Housed within a beautifully restored traditional Sumbanese home, the spa draws inspiration from the island's rich healing traditions. Ancient shamanic rituals are thoughtfully reimagined through contemporary wellness treatments, creating an authentic and deeply restorative experience.

Every treatment begins with ingredients sourced from the surrounding landscape. Nourishing oils, aromatic herbs and medicinal botanicals are harvested from Cap Karoso's own farm and neighbouring villages before being transformed into therapeutic blends designed to calm the mind, restore balance and reconnect guests with nature.
With little more than the sound of the ocean drifting through the treatment rooms, the spa offers a welcome pause from the outside world. It perfectly reflects Cap Karoso's philosophy that wellness isn't simply an indulgence, but an opportunity to reconnect with both place and self.
As the sun began its slow descent towards the Indian Ocean, Natasha's final evening at Sumba’s Cap Karoso unfolded with one last unforgettable experience.
Waiting on the shoreline was a beautifully styled private dining setting. Positioned beneath an illuminated tree on the beach, lit by hundreds of softly glowing lights, the setting allowed the island's natural surroundings to take centre stage.

As daylight faded into one of Sumba's famous sunsets, course after course celebrated the island's extraordinary produce, bringing together the same thoughtful approach to food that had defined the entire stay.
It was a fitting conclusion to three days at Cap Karoso - a destination where every detail, from the food and wellness experiences to the architecture and surrounding landscape, works in harmony to create a luxurious and indulgent stay.
